12 Hours of Sebring, 2016 IMSA Weathertech Championship

12 Hours of Sebring 2016

12 Hours of Sebring, March 19, 2016.

In typical fashion, Florida weather did not disappoint starting with blue sunny skies that eventually turned dark and stormy as lightning lit up the sky. The last time it rained during the 12-hour race was 18 years ago. The 12 Hours of Sebring runs rain or shine but lightning brought the red flag out for about 2 hours during the afternoon. The wet pavement proved to be troublesome for most teams with multiple crashes, cars off track, spins and cautions.

The Prototype and GTLM classes had repeat winners as the No. 2 Tequilla Patron ESM and the No.4 Corvette Racing C7.R took the checkered flag in their respective classes. The PC class saw CORE Autosport return to the top of the podium looking for their 6th straight championship! Ferrari, BMW and Audi filled the top 3 spots in GTD while Ferrari got its 1st win this season, Magnus Racing in the Audi R8 LMS finished on the podium in 3rd.

The Tequila Patron ESM seems to be the team to beat this season with only 1st place finishes thus far. The PC class has no clear front-runner yet, but it is very early in the season. We will see if anyone can bring down the CORE machine. In GTLM, the No. 4 Corvette C7.R has continued to be impressive taking 1st in all their races, but Porsche is hanging in there as the No.912 Porsche 911 RSR has 2 podium finishes as well. The No. 44 Audi R8 LMS has 2 podium finishes, a 1st and a 3rd, they lead GTD after 2 races.

The teams get a little break after a long 24 hour race at Daytona and a grueling rainy 12 Hours of Sebring. They will head into a series of shorter races, before finishing the season with a 10-hour race at the Petit Le Mans.
